Interview Tips

It is important to make a great first impression when meeting with your future employer.  So good preparation is the key!  The following guide will provide you with methods that guarantee success for all interview situations.

  1. Thoroughly research the job and the company.  Gather as much information as you can about the company.  Check Internet sites to learn about the company’s history, products, mission and goals both from a corporate point of view and locally.  You will impress the employer and be miles ahead of the competition.

  2. Make eye contact with the interviewer or the group of interviewers. This connection demonstrates that you are focused, confident and at ease under pressure.

  3. Be yourself and have fun with it.  Companies want to hire happy people who are professional but also have a light side.  Stow away any bad experiences and be positive in your answers.

  4. Dress professionally. Regardless of the type of position you are applying for, always look your best.

  5. The goal of the first interview is to be invited back for a second.  You may not get every question answered and every issue resolved in the first interview.  Keep a mental note of what you really like or what you may be concerned about and be ready to discuss them at the next meeting.

  6. Be a great listener.  Do not attempt to anticipate the next question.  Get a clear understanding of what is being asked or discussed before responding.

  7. Always share the reasons why you are open to a change and why you are very interested in their company.

  8. Be prepared with questions relating to the position you are applying for, about the company and about the department where you will be working.

  9. If asked, share your last annual salary and remain flexible if asked about your salary requirements.  Emphasize your primary interest in the opportunity, not income.

  10. Close the interview – and ask for the job.  You may not be a born sales person but you need to use that kind of skill now.  Share your enthusiasm for the position, review your ability to do the job described and ask about the possibility of a second meeting.
